Amsterdam, 7 november 2015 – Begin deze week werd een boodschap van Ban Ki-moon, de Secretaris Generaal van de Verenigde Naties, uitgesproken tijdens Zesde Conferentie van Lidstaten bij het VN Verdrag tegen Corruptie. In zijn speech noemde Ban Ki-moon het uitbannen van corruptie noodzakelijk voor het bereiken van de Sustainable Decelopment Goals (SDGs). 

Ban Ki-moon verklaarde: “The world counts on you to take bold decisions and act decisively to strengthen the global fight against corruption and bribery. (…) The 17 Sustainable Development Goals contain the promise of a better collective future for people and planet, and they address the potential challenges that can impede our progress. One such threat is highlighted in Goal 16, which calls for substantial reductions in corruption and bribery in all its forms.”

Verder merkte Ban Ki-moon enkele belangrijke feiten op: “corruption and bribery devastate lives. No country is immune; everyone suffers.” Hij benadrukte ook dat corruptie het leven van mensen duurder maakt, het vertrouwen van de consument en de geloofwaardigheid van bedrijven aantast, publieke gelden verspilt, het vooruitzicht op een eerlijke gemeenschap vernietigt en het andere vormen van criminaliteit faciliteert, zoals mensensmokkel en terrorisme.

“Our ultimate goal must be to turn hands thrust out in hope of payment into hands joined together against this pernicious crime. Let us forcefully convey the message that when bribes are paid, everyone counts the cost.”

Het VN Verdrag tegen Corruptie is het enige bindende universele anti-corruptie instrument. Het is in 2003 gesloten en heeft 177 Lidstaten.
